James Whitey Bulger 'Departed' From Life On The Run.

81-year-old gangster James "Whitey" Bulger, arrested at his Santa Monica, Calif., apartment building on Wednesday after 16 years on the lam, allowed law enforcement officials to search his two-bedroom Santa Monica apartment without a search warrant, Inside, they found a false wall that Bulger used to conceal a cache of weapons, and perhaps contradicting reports that Bulger was in ill health, exercise equipment that included a punching bag.  Bulger alos made frequent trips to Mexico to pick up a prescription heart drug.

The key tip was originally phoned in by a woman in Iceland who knew an elderly couple called the Gaskos in Santa Monica, who looked like Whitey Bulger and his girlfriend Catherine Greig. “There was a stack of tips that came in,” a source told the Boston Herald. “He picked one out that he thought was the most legitimate and said they needed to prioritize it." Whitey Bulger and his girlfriend Catherine Greig where using the false names of Charles Gasko and Carol Gasko in Santa Monica CA.

Yesterday, the FBI and US Marshal from Massachusetts issued a joint statement rejecting media reports that they initially gave a low priority to the tip that finally led to Bulger’s arrest. They stressed that the tip, which came from a source in Iceland, was immediately turned over to the FBI agent responsible for the Bulger Task Force, who verified the tip’s legitimacy. The tipster, a woman who had encountered the fugitives in Santa Monica, told authorities that Bulger was going by the name Charles Gasko, a name that didn’t correspond to anyone in California, suggesting it was a fake.

Though fake IDs were discovered in their residence after their arrests, Bulger and his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, both waived their identity hearings and agreed to be transported to Massachusetts to face charges, Steven Martinez, the assistant director in charge of the FBI's Los Angeles field office, told reporters.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — James “Whitey” Bulger may never have had to fill out a tenant application for the rent-controlled apartment near the beach where he and girlfriend Catherine Greig lived out their 16-year retirement on the run, the building owner’s widow said. “I don’t think he ever filled it out,” Ruth Nourafchan told the Boston Herald. “This was a different time.”

Whitey Bulger and Catherine Greig lived in the Princess Eugenia building at 1012 3rd St. since at least 1996, under the names Charles and Carol Gasko. The apparent lack of tenant screening, with no credit-check application, would have fit in perfectly with their paper-free lifestyle: They had no land-line telephone, no car and were said to pay for everything, including their $1,145 monthly rent, in cash, Soooo how did he get to Mexico to purchase his meds????  No car rental place gives you a car without a credit card and a drivers license,

There is no Charles Gasko listed living in California found in any commercial database, so how did Whitey Bulger aka Charles Gasko get a California drivers license, how did he get electrical service at the apartment in Santa Monica, Bulger rented the apartment under the name Charles Gasko which would require an application and a background check with a social secruity number, yet there is no record of Charles Gasko living in Santa Monica CA ????  There is also no Carol Gasko listed living in Santa Monica California.  Whitey Bulger was armed, he had so many weapons — some 30 firearms, rifles, shotguns and hand guns, authorities say “where he got them and how long he had them, those are questions that may be answered down the line.

Whitey Bulger had rented the Santa Monica unit by 1996 and perhaps as early as 1991, according to the property manager, Joshua Bond, which would be four years prior to his flight from Boston. By the time he went on the lam, Bulger also owned a condo in Clearwater, Fla., and he rented an apartment outside of London. He also stashed cash and documents in safe deposit boxes in London, Florida, and Dublin, Ireland.

Irish American cop Neil Sullivan, a 37-year-old federal marshal, is the man credited with cracking the 'Whitey' Bulger case, according to reports. Sullivan, a 37-year old marshal, was on the Bulger task force for only seven months when he made the vital breakthrough.

Marshal Neil Sullivan joined the Bulger task force just seven months ago and immediately followed up every lead including traveling to Florida where Whitey Bulger owned a condo in Clearwater and had stashed cash in Florida safety deposit boxes. “He went running with these things,” the federal source said. “He was traveling around the country interviewing people.”

It has also turned out that Bulger made frequent trips to Mexico to pick up a prescription heart drug and also keep safety boxes in banks in Europe, including in Ireland. Bulger has been speaking openly to FBI agents since he was arrested and even waived the need for a search warrant to search his Santa Monica apartment.

In the Santa Monica apartment, the agents found a false wall behind which Bulger had stashed guns and vast quantities of money. The search also found some workout equipment, leading to speculation that fears about Bulger’s health were exaggerated.

Whitey bulger told the FBI he often drove from Santa Monica to the American side of Tijuana parked the car and walked over the Mexican border to Tijuana, where he brought the prescription drugs that are freely available there. Whitey Bulger used another false identity to cross over and was never detected despite an FBI focus on cross border efforts based on a hunch that Bulger was seeking medication in Mexico.
