SARASOTA HERALD TRIBUNE....While 16-year-old Shawn Tyson awaits trial on charges of fatally shooting two British tourists in Newtown in April, police are still investigating who might have been with him at the time.
For now, the man they believe was with Tyson that night almost six months ago — felon Steven Fields, 19 — has not been charged in the killings. Fields has remained in custody since June 2011 for violating the terms of his probation on an unrelated robbery charge from 2007.
While in the Sarasota County jail, detectives confronted Fields with information and evidence they say puts him at Tyson's side when the fatal shots were fired on April 16. Fields, who had been released from prison on the robbery charge in early February 2011, denied being involved in the murders when detectives questioned him in June 2011, (Steven Fields was re-arrested on June 6th, 2011).
But police found cellular phone records of calls made between Fields' phone and Tyson's phone. One man identified Fields as being with Tyson just prior to the shootings. And a key witness in the case against Tyson also identified Fields as the man that Tyson told him had been involved with the robbery and murder of James Cooper and James Kouzaris. PERSON OF INTEREST, felon Steven Fields, 19, had been in prison for robbery with a firearm while wearing a mask. Felon Steven Fields, 19, was released from prison on or about Feb. 1st, 2011. Steven Fields was re-arrested on June 6th, 2011. James Cooper and James Kouzaris, the two british tourists, were murdered in the early morning of Saturday April 16th, 2011 in Newtown.
Felon Steven Fields, 19, appears to be one of Shawn Tyson's Newtown gang members as reported by a witness who had been threatened to be shot by three of Shawn Tyson's gang members on the afternoon of April 16th, 2011, they stated he would "end up like them two dead crackers", James Cooper and James Kouzaris.
See heavily redacted witness report on Shawn Tyson's Newtown gang below, the Sarasota Police report appears to be about Steven Fields;
Note in the police report, dated April 27th, 2011 above, how the witness describes Shawn Tyson and his 3 pals as "a gang of young black males who had been terrorizing the central Newtown community over the last several months, Steven Fields was released from prison on Feb 1st, 2011. The witness claims in the above report that Shawn Tyson and his 3 gang members were all armed with revolvers that they had hidden in the waistband of their pants.
The witness reports his first run in with Shawn Tyson and his gang was the later part of Feb. 2011 and his last run in with the gang (without Tyson) was on the afternoon of April 16th, 2011, when they told him he would "end up like them two dead crackers", this was same day James Cooper and James Kouzaris would be found shot to death in the Newtown Courts.
