The 32-year-old self-confessed 'gun freak' stood hurling grenades and spraying bullets onto crowds of Christmas shoppers and children from a platform in a busy city centre square.
He killed six people, including himself, and seriously injured 125 others yesterday lunchtime. It came shortly after he tried to rape a 45-year-old woman in his flat, where police have found an arsenal of weapons including a rocket launcher, AK47 and Kalashnikov.
Police were on the scene quickly and sealed off the square. TV images showed blood splattered across the cobblestones. Place Saint-Lambert is a busy crossroads. Every day 1,800 buses serve the square, which leads to downtown shopping streets. The Place Saint-Lambert and the nearby Place du Marche host Liege's annual Christmas market which consists of 200 retail cabins and attracts some 1.5 million visitors a year.
UK NEWS..Nordine Amrani, the lone gunman who died after killing SIX people and injuring scores in an attack in a crowded Belgian square on Tuesday, had a long criminal record. The 33-year-old Amrani was well known to the police before he went on the rampage in the eastern Belgian city of Liege, opening fire on a square packed with children and Christmas shoppers.
He had previously been convicted for drug dealing and illegal arms possession, as well as for holding stolen goods and other crimes, said Daniele Reynders, the public prosecutor for Liege. In September 2008 he was thrown behind bars for 58 months when police uncovered a weapons arsenal in his home. They found 10 firearms and 9,500 gun parts along with 2,800 cannabis plants, but a prison official said Amrani was granted early release last year.
BELGIAN JIHAD.....Belgian media reported on Wednesday that on the eve of the killing spree, Amrani, who is a Moroccan Muslim immigrant, transferred a sum of money to his wife's bank account with a note saying: "I love you my love. Good luck." Police hope to glean a better idea of the gunman's motivation by questioning his wife.
