UPDATED USF Team Searching Secret Cemetery At ‘Dozier School For Boys’ Marianna Fl Finds 50 Unmarked Graves

UPDATED December 10th, 2012......University of South Florida anthropologists say they've found evidence of 98 deaths and more graves than previously identified at a closed reform school in the Panhandle. A report released Monday by the university in Tampa says researchers found at least 50 gravesites at the former Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna. The report concludes there may be even more. That's 19 more gravesites than had been identified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in a 2010 investigative report.

Let's get real here all you citizens of Florida, during the 1930's, 1940's, 1950's and the the 1960's Marianna Fl was the center and a stronghold for Ku Klux Klan activity, lynching of black males along with unspeakable rape, torture and murder of white and black boys at the Dozier School for Boys was the order of the day.  Dozier school guards, administration, and the local Marianna Sheriff were all linked to the violent KKK. Just what do you think happened to the black boys at the Dozier School For Boys in the 1950's and the 1960's.

KKK activism increased as a reaction against the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Among the more notorious murders by Klan members in Florida are the torture and lynching of Claude Neal in Marianna Fl; Marianna Daily Times-Courier, Marianna Fl, October 26, 1934. “Big Preparation Made for Lynching Tonight” of the Negro Claude Neal.

Dozier School for Boys guard, Troy Elmer Tidwell was 10 years old and living in Marianna Fl when Claude Neal (Mr. Neal appears to have been innocent of any crimes and was hung and mutilated just for being “black”) was lynched in Marianna by the “Lynch Committee of Six,”, “Men, women, and children were numbered in the vast throng that came to witness the lynching.

It is reported from reliable sources that the little children, some of them mere tots, who lived in the Greenwood neighborhood, waited with sharpened sticks for the return of Neal’s body and that when it rolled in the dust on the road that awful night these little children drove their weapons deep into the flesh of the dead man”.  Claude Neal’s body was hung to a tree on the northeast corner of the Marianna courthouse square and left hanging for over 24 hours.

Some of those 'children' who mutilated the body of Claude Neal would grow up to be members of the Ku Klux Klan, just like their fathers, and some of those 'KKK Members' would eventually become guards at the Dozier School for Boys. The Ku Klux Klan is a racist, anti-Semitic movement with a commitment to extreme violence to achieve its goals of racial segregation and white supremacy. Of all the types of right-wing hate groups that exist in the United States, the Klan remains the one with the greatest number of national and local organizations around the country. As of today there is an active chapter of the KKK, 'the International Keystone Knights of the Ku Klux Klan' in Headland AL just 45 miles north of Marianna FL.

TIME MAGAZINE; RACES: They Done Me Wrong, Monday, Nov. 05, 1934.
ACTUAL NEWSPAPER NOTICE..NEGRO LYNCHING..Macon (Georgia) Telegraph, and in the Marianna Daily Times-Courier October 26, 1934. “Big Preparation Made for Lynching Tonight“.GREENWOOD, Fla., Oct. 26—Local citizens have been preparing all day for the lynching of a negro scheduled to take place here tonight. This morning a mob seized Claude Neal, 23, from a jail in Brewton, Ala., where he had been held in connection with the murder of white girl which took place here several days ago.

At noon a “Committee of Six” representing the mob announced a timetable for the lynching which was given in newspapers and over the radio as follows:  At sundown the negro will be taken to the farm two miles from here where Miss Lola Cannidy, the murder victim, lived. There he will be mutilated by the girl’s father. Then he will be brought to a pig-pen in the middle of a cotton field nearby, where the girl’s body was found, and killed. Finally his body will be brought to Marianna, the county seat, nine miles from here, and hung in the court house square for all to see. The negro is presently being held at an undisclosed location in a swamp along the Chattahoochee River, not far from the Cannidy farm.

All white folks are invited to the party,” said the announcement issued by the mob’s Committee of Six. (See notation of the “timetable” published in the Marianna Daily Times-Courier, before the murder of Clude Neal) As a result, thousands of citizens have been congregating all afternoon at the Cannidy farm. Bonfires have been started, piles of sharp sticks have prepared (FOR THE CHILDREN), knives have been sharpened and one woman has displayed a curry-comb with which she promises to torture the negro.

While the Marianna Fl, (Claude Neal), lynching in 1934 may have been the last “spectacle” lynching in the nation, many other lynchings of a less publicized nature would follow. In fact, Marianna would be the site of another lynching less than 10 years later in 1942 when Dozier School for Boys sadistic guard Troy Tidwell was now 20, the KKK also had a large presence in Marianna Fl that appears to still influence the area….

October 2, 2008, Marianna teacher ‘told students that ‘CHANGE’ stood for’ NIGGER…According to parents and students in Greg Howard’s seventh-grade social studies class, Howard on Friday, Sept. 26 asked the class a question regarding Obama’s call for change, and proceeded to write out what the letters C-H-A-N-G-E stood for.

“She told me that he wrote on the board ‘Can You Help A Nigger Get Elected’, and then laughed about it,” said Shelia Christian, a mother of one of Howard’s students. Marianna Teacher Greg Howard was suspended without pay for 10 days, was relieved of his football coaching duties, and will be transferred to the Jackson County Adult Education program, according to the Jackson County.
As late as 1952, a Grand Dragon (state president) spoke to the Florida Sheriff’s Association where he received applause for condemning an assassinated civil rights worker as a troublemaker and the FDLE expects the general public to believe that both white and ‘colored” boys are buried in the same graveyard at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna Florida, get real, there is a second, secret cemetery at Dozier. Then in 1964 there were the murder of the three civil rights workers, Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner, in Mississippi. In June 2005, Klan member Edgar Ray Killen was finally convicted of manslaughter.

Fast Forward To Today, October 13th, 2012 TAMPA (FOX 13) - It's now a race against time to find more bodies buried decades ago at a reform school in the Florida panhandle. An emergency court order just issued has brought the case back to life.  A research team from the University of South Florida headed up by Erin Kimmerle, associate professor of anthropology, now has 120 days to examine what is believed to be a second secret cemetery at The Dozier School for Boys in Marianna.

The reform school has a history of abuse, (child rape, torture and mudrer)."It's never been really known or documented how many people are buried there, so in the 90s, a group set up a number of crosses to mark the area," says Christian Wells, who is an associate professor of anthropology at USF.

Researchers found 31 crosses, but that was never the right number. Stories of torture leaked out from boys, who are now old men. They claim to have been beaten and abused.  "I think they are going to find a lot of bodies. They don't know how many boys are really there," says Robert Straley, who lived at the school as a boy.

The story has received national attention and some survivors have dubbed themselves the "White House Boys," because they say a small white building is where the abuse took place. Over the summer, USF researchers, using ground-penetrating radar, found more bodies.  "We've determined that there are at least 49 burials in that particular area, but the documentation they found suggests double that number died. Where are the other 50 bodies?" asks Wells.

THE COVER UP: And that's the mystery right now, where are the other bodies? The team of researchers came across information indicating a second, unmarked cemetery at the school, but the state planned to sell the property and they were denied access until the court issued the emergency injunction.  They hope to get to work soon, but the fall semester will make scheduling the work a challenge. And what do they expect to find?

FOX 13 contacted the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which says the agency is aware of the new plan to look for a second cemetery and more bodies, but would not comment on the new development, (big surprise).
