JUNE 2005 Philadelphia MS, Cole Thornton shows up; The leader of a Mississippi Ku Klux Klan group says its members have been asked to stay away from Philadelphia MS because they fear any organized protest would hurt the case of Edgar Ray Killen, who is accused of the 1964 murders of three civil rights workers, photos above. That’s not stopping members of the white supremacist group from other states from attending the trial, however. For the second day in a row, a member of the group escorted Killen into the Neshoba County Courthouse on Tuesday.
Grand Wizard J.J. Harper from the American White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan of Georgia greeted Killen and escorted him into the courthouse. On the next day a man calling himself Cole Thornton, who said he was with the Florida American White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, escorted Killen and his wife into the building. Police later said that the name “Cole Thornton” was an alias after asking for the man’s identification; his Florida driver’s license read “Charles Denton, Englewood Fl.”
Charles Denton, 64, was stopped by Philadelphia MS Police officers as he was leaving the Neshoba county Courthouse with J.J. Harper, Imperial Wizard of the American White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan based in Cordele, Ga. Police examined his identification and concealed weapon permit he was carrying in his wallet. Harper told officers they had spoken with Neshoba County Sheriff Larry Myers and had agreed not to carry weapons in the vicinity of the square. "We are only here to show support," Denton told officers. "We are not here looking for any trouble."
Ku Klux Klan Imperial Wizzard Cole Thornton whose real name is Charles Denton in Englewood Florida claims;
The Imperial Wizard of the United Northern and Southern Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is guarded about discussing his organization's membership. But this much Cole Thornton of Englewood Fl openly shares: Florida cops belong to his Klan group because he said they like its rigid standards and its adherence to a strict moral code. Lt. Stephen Maynard of the Alachua Sheriff's Office said: "I have no reason to doubt his [Thornton's] claims."
The United Northern and Southern Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is listed as one of 56 Florida "hate groups" according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based group that provides tolerance-education programs, offers legal representation against white supremacists and tracks hate groups;

United Northern and Southern Knights of the KKK: Originally formed by Michigan Klansmen, the United Northern and SouthernKnights quickly became a regional Klan. Part of their expansion was a 2007 merger with the National Aryan Knights of the Ku Klux Klan LLC (NAK) of Florida, a tiny Klan group. After the merger, the UNSK national office remained in Fraser, Michigan. However, former NAK leader Cole Thornton of Englewood, Florida, whose real name is Charles Denton, became the leader of the united groups. In April 2010, when Klan fliers were distributed in several neighborhoods in Palm Coast, Florida, Thornton announced to the media that the UNSK Florida was conducting amembership drive.
The fliers contained 20 reasons to join the UNSK, as well as rants against illegal immigration, non-whites, and homosexuals. Following police investigations, the UNSK affiliation of a corrections officer and a police officer became public. In December 2009, Wayne Kerschner, an AlachuaCounty corrections officer, was fired after he admitted he was a member of the UNSK. Kerschner told investigators he and his wife were dues-paying members of the UNSK and that he had attended Klan events. In January of the same year, JamesElkins, a Fruitland Park police officer, resigned after an investigation began regarding allegations he was a district Kleagle for the Englewood-based National Aryan Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, and subsequently [after the merger] a member of the UnitedNorthern and Southern Knights.
Ku Klux Klan recruitment fliers dropped on the the driveways of Palm Coast residents in at least three neighborhoods on Easter Day, April 2010, are part of an ongoing KKK recruitment drive in Flagler County and across Florida, according to Cole Thornton, Imperial Wizard of the United Northern & Southern Knights of the KKK (UNSKKK). “It’s not just in Palm Coast,” Thornton told FlaglerLive on Sunday. “We have people from the Keys up to Fort Walton, to Tallahasse, Gainesville, Orlando–all over Florida.” He described the results as “wonderful,” including in Flagler County, though he said that while his branch of the Klan has many members active politically around the state, none are in Flagler politics.
