A New York City man, who had a young local woman buy two handguns from a South Burlington Vermont firearms dealer, has been sentenced to five years in prison. Devon Holmes, 26, is prohibited by federal law from buying or possessing firearms because he has three felony convictions — all in New York City, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. Holmes has been convicted for two attempted robberies and one grand larceny, records show Holmes circumvented the federal gun law by arranging for the woman to buy a 9-mm semiautomatic pistol and a .32-caliber derringer for him in May 2013 at Datillio’s Gun Shop on Shelburne Road, Burlington VT, the indictment noted. Officials said a few days after acquiring the handguns in Vermont, Holmes had them in Brooklyn when officers with the New York City Police made a routine traffic stop and arrested him.
